Future Challenges of Civil Engineers

As civil engineers, we face important long-term challenges that will need to be addressed. Specifically, civil engineers are often rewarded on the premise of initial construction cost rather than extending the life cycle of infrastructure.
As our society shifts to a sustainable mindset, the need for incentives to streamline construction waste in order to reduce construction material consumption will become essential. Investors and users will benefit long-term through a reduction of investment costs and their impact on the environment.
Civil Engineering research and development will become essential in designing efficient and sustainable new and existing infrastructure. Innovative new materials that reduce construction costs and their impact on the environment will also become vital to sustainable practices.
